How often have we found ourselves negotiating a difficult problem or resolving a conflict using techniques and insights acquired through mindfulness practice?  Can you now imagine actively functioning in your professional and personal life without these tools?  The answers to these questions motivate many mindfulness practitioners to work to extend the benefits of mindfulness to others who may never have considered its applicability to their business, professional, or personal activities.

This unique conference will provide a forum for people interested in the application of mindfulness meditation to share their experiences, insights, and suggestions for taking mindfulness practice out into the world.  The conference will:

  • Assemble people who are applying mindfulness outside of the traditional “spiritual practice” settings to discuss ways for strengthening and better organizing such efforts.
  • Attract people interested in exploring how to introduce mindfulness meditation into the wider world, especially in business (e.g. leadership, strategy, conflict resolution), the professions (e.g. law, medicine, law enforcement, education), and other organizational settings (e.g., government, schools, hospitals, colleges, prisons).
  • Develop a sense of community of similarly motivated people through the give and take of a participatory conference and begin to form groups and task forces of people interested in exploring applied mindfulness topics.
  • Explore the issues and challenges of extending mindfulness into various settings (e.g., using different styles of language when presenting mindfulness, managing people’s expectations, and applying various presentation formats).
  • Identify and cultivate opportunities for reaching out to organizations and groups potentially interested in Applied Mindfulness.
  • Develop curricula and reading lists for the further education and training in mindfulness meditation and applied mindfulness.
  • Explore modes of communication, such as an on-line community, for sharing experiences and resources.
  •  Create the foundation for organizing and conducting an annual Applied Mindfulness Conference at Karme Choling.
